Ici et Ailleurs — LiLiROZE

“I don’t photograph what I see, but what I feel.” For three decades, the photographer LiLiROZE has made blur her photographic signature. Her work, which has been awarded multiple times, revolves around a quest: to give materiality to sensations. How to give form to inherently abstract mental images? How to convey a feeling? How to freeze a moment of brilliance in time and space? While she became known for her sublime images of women that captivated the world of fashion and beauty, with this new monograph, she opens the door to a more personal universe.

LiLiROZE takes you “Ici et Ailleurs” [« Here and Elsewhere »] on an intense journey where emotion reigns supreme. Structured like a film in sequences with a highly cinematic dimension (Nuances, Silences, Abysses, Lost Paradises, Secret Gardens), this voyage gracefully explores the territory of poetry and dreamlike states, sublimating in a great surge mixed with abandon and exploration “the things of life”: desire, passion, longing, childhood, loss, our relationship with passing time. Dedicated to her father, this book is as much an intimate journal and inner journey as it is a window to the world. A magnificent celebration of an invisible beauty that suddenly appears.

Ici et Ailleurs,” a tribute to the fragility of existence, to its strength, to its inexorable and ephemeral brilliance. An ode to slowness, to time passing without us having any control over it, other than stealing a few fleeting moments…

“Nothing lasts and yet nothing passes either,
and nothing passes just because nothing lasts.”
Philip Roth

LiLiROZE, the photographer who writes with images…

LiLiROZE’s latest book was published eight years ago. With this new authorial work, LiLiROZE synthesizes her production and incorporates the latest series she has produced in recent years. Since her work is intimately linked to her personal life, “Ici et Ailleurs” is an invitation to share with her what makes the universality of an existence and allows us to be part of the same humanity.

Around the themes of desire, the body, mourning, and the fleetingness of life, she weaves connections between herself and us, between here (and now) and elsewhere (and eternally), in an atmosphere blending melancholy, softness, and romanticism.

Thus, echoing the words of the American philosopher George Steiner, it can be affirmed that LiLiROZE’s work is both a rupture and a encounter. The photographer steps out of herself and compels us to do the same. Together, we break with our certainties to approach what is other.

“At first, photography is something abstract, intangible, it’s a story of light, a gaze. But I feel like I photograph as one touches, as one sculpts. I believe the boundary is thin between painting and my way of photographing; it’s somewhat about touch.”
LiLiROZE

A book designed as an inner film

Nuances, Silences, Abysses, Lost Paradises, Secret Gardens—keywords that softly lead us into the depth of LiLiROZE’s universe. Punctuated with poetic texts, each sequence takes us from one emotion to another, from the joy of color to the melancholy of black & white. The photographer reveals her extreme sensitivity and her ability to create portrait-landscapes. Her staging is of immense subtlety; the complexity of their composition fades away in the contemplation of their beauty. Only the pure emotion created by these images remains, each one a painting in its own right.

While color (from reds to blues) enhances the bodies of the women she portrays in Nuances and Abysses, or envelops the childlike characters ready to take flight in her series Secret Gardens, she has chosen black & white to evoke absence and the passage from childhood to disappearance in her sequences Silences and Lost Paradises.

Nature is present everywhere. Generous and lush flowers, wooded groves, bare winter trees, the nadiral lights of the setting sun, the rounded hills, the rustling leaves of a forest reborn, the transparent waters of a sleeping lake, the magical shadows of an autumn night, blue shores, cottony clouds, and wild plants… Vegetation entwines, exalts, purifies, transcends.

Regarding the use of blur

In photography, blur is most often the result of a basic error. With LiLiROZE, it is elevated to the ranks of a highly mastered artistic practice. Her perception of the world is one of suspended time, where forms subtly dissolve into space, leaving an impression of reality rather than certainty, placing more importance on sensation, mystery, than on the precision of lines and contours. Her blur creates a movement that moves, reminiscent of narrative blur in cinema, while her chromatic palette, dominated by reds, offers an ode to desire, sensuality, and femininity, all sublimated by the softness of natural light.

“Everything is a game. The motif? What am I searching for?
First and foremost, I am searching for freedom.”
Man Ray, 1945.

Who is LiLiROZE?

Born in 1972 in Geneva, LiLiROZE left her studies in econometrics to attend the École nationale supérieure Louis Lumière, from which she graduated in 1997. Since her first exhibition in 2001 in Paris during the Month of Photography, she has continuously deepened her practice, alternating between commissions for the fashion and beauty world, personal work, exhibitions worldwide (Arles, China, Brazil, France), and monographic books. Also a mother of four children, she has settled in a small village in the southeast of France for several years, with just over 500 inhabitants, a former medieval fortified town that perfectly suits her photography: out of time and therefore timeless.

It has been over 8 years since she last published her work. “Ici et Ailleurs” will be her fifth book, after publishing in 2011 and 2016 with Editions de La Martinière, and in 2012 and 2014 with HC Editions.

“I don’t photograph what I see, but what I feel. I love slowness and long exposures, which allow breathingand heartbeat. I photograph almost without light. And what comes out ofthe shadows is poetry, with the taste of dreams and the fragrance of secrets.”
LiLiROZE
